As in any profession or trade, having the right tools is essential part of doing a good job, and massage is no exception. Whether you’re a physiotherapist, Reiki practitioner, occupational or massage therapist, a good quality, purpose built massage table or spa bed is an indispensable asset. Even for non-professionals who only perform massage on a casual basis for friends and/or family, the benefits of a massage table make them a worthwhile investment.
Massage Table Designs
Modern tables are available in a variety of different designs and with a range of user friendly features for greater convenience and efficiency.
Portable or folding massage tables are probably the most popular type of table on offer. These tables feature lightweight construction and are designed to be quickly and easily taken apart and reassembled. The advantages of this design are twofold: firstly, for practitioners who travel to their clients, this means the table can be readily transported and set up where-ever needed; and secondly, they can be stowed away when not in use to save space. Many models even come with a convenient carrying case for enhanced portability.
Another popular design is the electric lift massage table which has a mechanism for raising or lowering the bed and, on some models, adjusting the angle of the top half of the table, making them useful for people with disabilities or injuries.
Features and Accessories
Some notable features common to a majority of models in today’s market include adjustable height, face cradles and arm rests, and high density foam decks for optimal comfort and support. The latter are often made of materials resistant to oil and water or else are specially treated to provide the same protection.
In addition to the tables themselves, there are a range of accessories such as massage table warmers, heating pads and bolsters. These are used to provide an additional level of comfort, or occasionally, for medical reasons.
